The Midway National Memorial Commemorative Coin was instituted by the International
Midway Memorial Foundation to commemorate the designation of Midway Atoll as a National
Memorial by Congress in 1999 and by the Secretary of the Interior in 2000. The coin's
creation is an acknowledgement that the U.S. Congress has recognized in legislation that
the men who fought in the Battle of Midway are truly worthy of every American's respect,
honor, pride and admiration. Fifty-nine years after one of the most decisive naval battles
in U.S. history changed the course of the war in the Pacific, our nation said "Well done"
to its Midway veterans by elevating the status of a small coral atoll to NATIONAL
MEMORIAL.
Commemorative Origin:
*** The sterling silver Midway National Memorial Commemorative Coin was first
designed by the International Midway Memorial Foundation in March 2001. On one
side is a map of the Midway Atoll that displays a line of latitude and longitude
that intersects at the present site of the Midwary Memorial Monument on Sand
Island. On the other side is pictured the monument dedicated by the IMMF in 1995.
An inscription reads: "A Nation Honors the Most Decisive Naval Battle in U.S.
History." *** |
